CLUBS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND STUDENT CITIZENSHIP
The University of Yaoundé I campus is a place where students learn about responsibility and citizenship. In Ngoa-Ekelle, student organizations are structured according to a clear hierarchy, providing students with an ideal setting to get involved, represent their peers, and carry out large-scale projects.
Student Associations: Representation by Institution. Operating under the supervision and guidance of the Directorate of the Center for University Activities (DCOU), the Student Associations (student council boards) represent the first level of student engagement. Elected by their peers, these boards serve as the primary points of contact for university administrations and the Rector’s Office, advocating for student rights and fostering academic life. They are organized into major entities:
- The Faculties : FALSH (Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences), FS (Sciences), FMSB (Medical and Biomedical Sciences), and FSE (Education Sciences).
- The Grandes Écoles : ENS (École Normale Supérieure), ENSPY (École Nationale Supérieure Polytechnique de Yaoundé), and the IUT in Bois (Mbalmayo).
Clubs: shared passions beyond the faculties In addition to these official bodies, the Hill of Knowledge is teeming with themed clubs. Unlike school-based associations, these clubs are not necessarily affiliated with a specific faculty; they bring together students from all walks of life around common goals and shared passions:
- Culture, Art, and Entertainment: YUM, The Glorious Voices, the University Ballet, the Majorettes, the Marching Band, and the legendary Fan Club.
- Citizenship and Impact: Communication Club, Environmental Club (“Clean Campus”), First Aid Club (University Red Cross), and interdisciplinary science clubs.
How can I get involved or sign up? To join your school’s student council, elections are held in accordance with the academic calendar. For cross-school clubs, students may freely register at the beginning of the year with their respective club offices to complete the necessary formalities for recognition and support.
