Movies come to the UYI: Culture in the spotlight at Majestic

The Ngoa-Ekelle campus is not only a center of academic excellence; it is once again becoming the cultural hub of Yaoundé. Thanks to a groundbreaking agreement signed between the Rector’s Office and the prestigious Ivorian cinema chain Majestic One, the former Canal Olympia movie theater at the University of Yaoundé I is getting a new lease on life. By entrusting the management of this space to a leading operator, UYI has pulled off a bold feat: balancing campus activities, access to popular culture, and the professional development of its students.
1. A world-class movie theater on campus
Thanks to this strategic partnership, the university theater has been transformed. Equipped with state-of-the-art projection technology and a cutting-edge sound system, it now offers a rich and diverse lineup of films, featuring both global and African releases. For the student community and residents of the “Hill of Knowledge,” this is an opportunity to enjoy first-rate cultural entertainment right on campus at prices specially tailored to students’ budgets.
2. A hands-on workshop for arts programs
Beyond mere entertainment, this partnership with Majestic One represents a tremendous academic opportunity. For students in the Department of Arts and Archaeology—particularly those in the “Film and Audiovisual Production” track—this movie theater, connected to the professional network, becomes a true field laboratory. It offers a unique learning environment for understanding distribution, programming, and the economics of cinema in Africa.
3. Revitalize the city's cultural life
By opening its doors to the general public through this modern facility, the University of Yaoundé I reaffirms its role as a cultural beacon in the heart of Cameroon’s capital. Festivals, film discussions, and special screenings will punctuate the academic year.
Through this unprecedented partnership with Majestic One, the UYI proves once again that innovation in Ngoa-Ekelle also plays out on the big screen, much to the delight of movie lovers and future film professionals.
